 | Ambrose Bierce US author (06/24/1842 - ) | | 1842 Ambrose Bierce was born in Meigs County Ohio. He was the tenth of thirteen children. From 1861 to 1865 he served in the American Civil War. After the war Bierce settled in San Francisco where he worked on several newspapers. He married Mollie Day, a wealthy miner's daughter. After the couple moved to London for three years he returned to San Francisco and joined the San Francisco, "Examiner". This started his long career as a columnist and contributor. From 1909-1912 his "Collected Works," which he later renamed, "The Devil's Dictionary," were published. He lost his children when they were 15 and 26. Problems with his marriage didn't make life easier for him. In time, Bierce established himself a kind of literary dictator of the West Coast. He was so respected and feared as a critic that his judgement could make or break an aspiring author's reputation. Bierce was well-known by his initials, A.G.B. Some enemies and detractors called him "Almighty God Bierce". His sarcasm and cynism also caused him to be called "wicked" and "devilish". Godlike or devilish, his comments were insightful, humorous and entertaining. In 1913, by most accounts he went to Mexico and vanished during the Mexican civil war. But Roy Morris and others contend that he didn't go to Mexico. They have reason to believe Bierce committed suicide in the Grand Canyon. |
